PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales field hockey team broke a scoreless tie off a penalty corner as time expired in the first half and went on to a 4-0 non-conference win over Eastern Connecticut State University in the 2023 opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Scott Miracle-Gro Field.
The shutout was the first for the Wildcats in this six-game series and third straight by a combined margin of 11-3.
Eastern was outshot 12-0 in the first half, with first-year sophomore
Hannah Jalowiec (Cheshire) making eight saves on 22 Johnson & Wales shots in her debut.
In addition to Jalowiec, Eastern's lineup featured two additional first-year players in
Betsy Davis (Enfield) and
Grace Barlage (Guilford). Five of the team's seven substitutes are also in their first years in the program.
Eastern visits Regis College in a non-conference match Wednesday. The Warriors have won all four matches in the series, including last year's 8-0 decision at Rick McCarthy Field.
