BABSON PARK, Mass.— The Babson College men's soccer team broke a scoreless tie with seven minutes left in the first half and was finally able to seal the win by scoring with six minutes left as the Beavers defeated Eastern Connecticut State University for the sixth straight time at Hartwell-Rogers Field since 2012 with a 2-0 non-conference win Sunday afternoon.
Since winning the first three matches in the series dating back to Eastern's (1-2-1) undefeated (regular season) in 1960, the Warriors are 3-8-0 against Babson (5-2-1), having been shut out in its last four losses in the series.
The Beavers, two-time defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament champions and NCAA qualifiers, are ranked second in the region. Babson extended its home unbeaten streak to 13 with the win.
Coming off a 4-0 shutout of the University of Southern Maine Friday in its Little East Conference opener – when it outshot the Huskies, 18-4 with a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks -- Eastern mustered only three shots and one corner kick against Babson, forcing keeper Walker White to make only one save. The shutout was the fifth in eight starts for White, who lowered his goals-against average to 0.50 and improving his save percentage (slightly) to .889.
Graduate student Sam Morgan student had a foot in both goals for Babson, which has surrendered only one goal at home in posting a record of 4-0-1 this year at Hartwell-Rogers FIeld. The road contest was the first of the year for Eastern, which flourished with a 7-2-1 record away from Thomas Nevers Field a year ago.
Morgan scored once and had an assist and fellow graduate student Justin Stone produced a goal for the Beavers which came in the 38
th minute and proved to be enough for the victory.
Making his second straight start, senior
Dylan Pallanck (Willington) made six saves (five in the first half on 11 Babson shots) and went on play the entire game for the first time since going all 110 minutes in a 4-3 overtime loss at the University of Massachusetts Boston in last year's Little East playoff semifinals.
After a couple of near misses early in the match, Babson took its 1-0 lead late in the first half on Stone's second marker of the season. Pallanck kicked away Morgan's strike from inside 10 yards but Stone beat a defender defender to the loose ball and touched home the rebound.
Walker easily handled senior
Andres Mayuri's (West Hartford) shot from outside the box in the 56th minute for his lone save of the day, and the visitors had their best scoring chance of the match snuffed out by Babson junior Lyndon Way in the 60th minute. First-year player
Christian Mendoza (New Milford) forced a turnover deep in the final third and forced White off his line before Way raced back to block his shot.
Morgan, who came off the bench to put two of his three shots on frame, sent a header just over the crossbar off a service from senior Liam Rhatigan in the 77th minute that would have made it 2-0 but tacked on an insurance tally just minutes later. He shouldered past a defender to get to Anderson's ball along the left flank and then chipped a 20-yard shot over Pallanck for his third goal of the season inside the final ten minutes.
Eastern visits Fisher College Wednesday at 3 p.m. In Eastern's 1-0 win in the first meeting between programs last year, current sophomore
Niall O'Brien (Guilford) scored his first career goal early in the second half, and current junior
Nathan Yeich (Willington) needed only two saves to record one of his three shutouts in a stretch of three straight starts.
