MANSFIELD, Conn. – TJ Liponis' two-out grand slam in the top of the ninth inning accounted for the only runs of the game as Endicott College completed a non-conferennce baseball sweep of Eastern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.
In the first game, Endicott (28-2) erased Eastern's (22-8) early two-run lead by scoring seven runs fourth inning on seven hits, an infield error and a hit batter in a 9-5 victory.
Liponis's only hit of the second game came on a 1-1 pitch and cleared the 375 foot sign in right field, spoiling a sterling "relief" outing submitted by first-year lefty
Chris Torres (West Springfield, MA). Torres entered the game with one out in the second and shut down the Gulls on three hits while fanning nine and walking three. Torres was lifted after walking the first two batters in the ninth. With two out, Robbie Wladkowski was hit in the helmet on a 1-2 pitch to load the bases to set up Liponis' fourth home run of the year.
In the second game, Eastern was limited to two hits and six baserunners by starter John Connolly and reliever Kyan Bagshaw (3-0). In a scoreless game, Bagshaw was called upon with two out and two on in the eighth and got a swinging strikeout to end the inning, and with a 4-0 cushion in the ninth, got two strikeouts to end the game after issuing a one-out walk.
Eastern scored the first two runs of the second game but squandered several opportunities to pad its lead, leaving two on in the second and two more after scoring two in the third. Senior lefty Jordan Gottesman (8-0) struck out eight and walked one, allowing eight hits before giving way in the ninth when the Warriors rallied for two runs before leaving a pair aboard to end the game.
Preston Irby (Bridgeport) and
Mason Balmer (North Haven) each had three hits in the doubleheader, Balmer doubling twice, while
Jared Clark (Bristol) knocked in two runs in the ninth inning of the opener with a pinch single.
Eastern visits Keene State College in a Little East Conference game Tuesday at 3 p.m.
