Cross Country: D'Andrea, Melendez Lead Warriors at NCAA Mideast Regional Meet

NCAA DIVISION III MIDEAST REGION CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Hosted by St. Lawrence University

at Canton, NY
Run over the Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course

On a cold morning in Canton, NY, the Warriors battled a challenging course at St. Lawrence University for the NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals. Times all around were relatively slow, considering the race was won by Nathan Tassey of Roger Williams in 25:05. Last year, Tassey won the race at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford in 24:03, over a minute faster. The women's winner, Audrey Maclean, ran over 20 seconds faster last year, which was enough for third place.

7. Jake Thompson (Sr.) – 27:56 (5:37 per mile) – 102nd Overall

The men were led by junior Zachary D'Andrea (Wallingford), who has led the team in nearly every race this season and was the top finisher from the Little East Conference. D'Andrea got out hard, going through the first 955 meters in the top 50. He faded slightly throughout the race but placed well on a slower course. First-year runner Luke Dalton (Naugatuck) was the standout performer for the men, finishing 2nd for the team in his first season. He held a position in the mid-70s throughout the race, keeping consistent splits over the 8 kilometers. Sophomore Noah Hauswirth (Branford) worked with Dalton well, finishing just half a second behind at the line. Sophomore Joey Caruk (Wethersfield) and first-year runner Kyle Kornacki (Voluntown) finished 4 seconds apart and 4 seconds behind the 2/3 duo. The entire men's squad finished within 36 seconds of each other. Sophomore Sam Ambrocio (Beacon Falls) put himself in a good position early on but could not maintain his early pace. He recovered well in the last mile to keep himself in the top 100. Senior Jake Thompson (Portland) found himself working with Ambrocio in the middle of the race, closing out an impressive senior season with another sub 28 performance.

Notable: RPI (44 points) won the team title by taking the No. 3, No. 6, No. 10, No. 11 and No. 14 spots with New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) teams Williams College (95), Middlebury College (104), Wesleyan University (109) and Amherst College (111) filling in the next four spots.
Eastern Women: DNF/25 Teams/185 Finishers

Eastern Women's Individual Results (6000 Meters):
1. Emely Melendez (So.) – 24:41 (6:37 per mile) – 88th Overall
2. Daria Fournier (Sr.) – 26:47 (7:11 per mile) – 138th Overall
3. Keira Warner (So.) – 26:59 (7:14 per mile) – 140th Overall
4. Natalie Estabrook (Fy.) – 28:19 (7:35 per mile) – 161st Overall

Sophomore Emely Melendez (Nashua, NH) found herself running solo over the 6000-meter race, with the absence of junior Isabel Cintron (Vernon). She was able to stay consistent throughout and hold a position in the high 80s for the entire race. Senior Daria Fournier (Farmington) was also in-between teammates, getting out well in the large crowd. She ran her first mile in under 7 minutes, putting herself in a strong position. Sophomore Keira Warner (Ellington) progressed well over her race, finishing just under the 27-minute mark. First-year runner Natalie Estabrook (Clinton) closed out the squad in 28:19, capping off her first collegiate season. Unfortunately for the women, their 4 runners did not meet the threshold of 5 required to give them a team placement.

Notable: Teams from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) captured the top four places: Williams College (39), Middlebury College (96), Connecticut College (101) and Amherst College (129). Rhode Island College senior Haley Oliver (19th) was the first finisher from a Little East Conference institution.

With the cross-country season behind them, the squad will move onto indoor track, which has its first meet on Saturday, December 6 at Wesleyan University.
