Women's Basketball: Maddie Topa a Repeater as NEWBA Rookie-of-the-Week

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – First-year Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball player  Maddie Topa (New Hartford) has repeated as the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Rookie-of-the-Week, released today.
 
Also named the Little East Conference's Rookie-of-the-Week for the second straight week on Monday, the 5-foot-8 inch guard/forward led Eastern to a 72-64 non-conference road win over Bridgewater State University with her first career double-double with 13 points and career-highs of 12 rebounds, five steals and four blocks. Having appeared in all ten games and having started the last six for the 4-6 Warriors, Topa ranks third on the team in scoring (8.2), shares the team lead in steals (15) and is second in free-throw percentage ( 78.6) in an average of only 24.2 minutes.
 
As a starter over the last six games, Topa has helped the Warriors to a 4-2 record by averaging 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in an average of 31.5 minutes. In those games, she has 12 steals, ten assists and five blocked shots and has converted 10 of 13 free throws.
 
The three-time All-Stater at Northwestern Regional #7 in Winchester, CT scored over 2000 points in high school and is the Highlanders'  all-time leading scorer among both girls and boys and holds program records for points in a season (647) and game (48).
 
A winner of its first LEC game Dec. 3, Eastern plays its final 15 regular-season games in the conference, hosting the University of Massachusetts Boston Jan. 3 and defending LEC tournament champion University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Jan. 6. Eastern is ranked seventh among nine teams in the LEC pre-season poll, UMass Boston tied for fifth and UMass Dartmouth fourth.
