Baseball: Anchormen Knock Warriors into LEC Tournament Elimination Game

Box Score
RINDGE, N.H. – Fifth-seeded Rhode Island College scored all of its runs in the first three innings in a 12-2 rout of third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in a winners' bracket game of the 2025 Little East Conference baseball tournament Thursday at Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University.

With the loss, Eastern (28-12) drops into an elimination game tentatively set (weather permitting) for  Friday at 11 a.m. against second-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston (25-15). The Beacons were shut out, 7-0, in Wednesday's opener by Rhode Island College but remained alive with a 12-5 win over defending champion and sixth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Thursday in a rematch of last year's LEC title game.

Eastern had opened the tournament Wednesday behind the sterling seven-inning pitching effort of senior Matthew Wootton (Milford) with a 3-1 win over LEC rival and fourth-seed University of Southern Maine.

Eastern (28-12) had swept Rhode Island (17-21) by scores of 17-1 and 3-1 April 4 at Providence but Thursday, three Eastern pitchers allowed 12 hits and sophomore righty Jason Potvin (2-1) scattered three hits and three walks and fanned five in a route-going effort.

Eastern was swept at UMass Boston April 27 at Monan Park, 6-4, 9-0, with graduate righty Nathan Furino (East Haven) losing the opener in three innings of relief, and graduate righty Max Moss limiting Eastern to four hits in the nightcap and his teammates collecting 13 hits off three Eastern pitchers.

The Anchormen drove Eastern senior lefty Francis Ferguson (Holden, MA) from the box in the second inning, scoring nine runs on eight hits, with Eastern's one error leading to five unearned runs.
