MANSFIELD, Conn. -- After failing to score in losing its first two home matches of the 2025 season, the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team was in search of its first goal at Rick McCarthy Field when the Warriors hosted the University of Maine at Farmington in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon.
As it turned out, the Warriors didn't have to wait very long as senior co-captain
Emma Sanson (Thomaston) scored twice in the first 13 minutes and Eastern (4-5) was never headed in a 4-0 victory over first-time opponent Farmington (3-6).
Winless a year ago, Farmington has shown signs of life this year, winning three of its first five this year before dropping its fourth in a row Saturday to an Eastern team which has now totalled 17 goals in its four victories this year.
The Eastern defense has now recorded as many as two consecutive shutouts for the first time since the Little East Conference championship season of 2021, when Sarah Gallagher recorded two straight shutouts to end the month of September, then kicked out every attempt in three straight Little East Conference playoff wins in early November of 2021. The Warriors have not allowed a goal this year in the last 147 minutes and 32 seconds, dating back to a 6-1 loss at RPI at week ago. Eastern logged its first shutout of the year this past Monday in a 2-1 road win over the University of Saint Joseph.
While the offense registered multiple goals for the fourth time this year, the defense held up its end of the bargain, with senior goalie
Hannah Jalowiec (Cheshire), junior
Veronica McKenna (Wethersfield) and sophomore
Kate Paradise (Norwalk) all taking turns in net, combining for 13 saves. The defensive line also shown, with junior
Katie Harrington (Keene, NH), senior co-captain
Angelina Falleni (Byram, NJ) and junior
Savannah Goodness (New Fairfield) also making big plays that kept the shutout intact. Harrington and Falleni each had defensive saves in sweeping potential goals off the back line, while Goodness came off the bench to clear a shot out of the circle that had caromed off the left post.
Jalowiec made two saves over the first 30 minutes to earn her first win since October 25, 2023, when she made three saves in a 2-0 Little East Conference home win over Western Connecticut. McKenna turned back six shots over 25 minutes in starting the second half, and Paradise swept away three shots over the final five minutes.
All 24 roster players saw time in the match.
Eastern visits Salve Regina University in a non-conference match Wednesday at 6 p.m.
