Men's Lacrosse: Young Warriors Overpowered by Rams in 2026 Opener

Box Score
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Farmingdale State College men's lacrosse team scored 13 first-half goals on 35 shots and went on to a 20-4 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University Friday afternoon at Rams Field.

Eastern was making its 2026 debut after opening matches against Anna Maria College and University of Saint Joseph were postponed due to weather. The win is the fifth without a loss for Farmingdale, which had won its first four matches by an average of only three goals, including an 8-7 decision this past Tuesday at Utica College.

Having averaged 15 wins per season the last three seasons, Farmingdale improved to 27-2 at home over the last four seasons.    The Rams posted their fourth win over Eastern in the last four years and improved to 3-1 all-time at home against Eastern, the Warriors' win coming, 12-8, nine years ago.

Farmingdale scored the first three goals of the game over the first 5:22, then used a nine goal second quarter to build a 13-3 halftime lead. The Rams shut out Eastern on six shots in the third quarter to move out to a 16-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes.

A young team which features 21 newcomers on a 46-player roster, Eastern got its goals from three freshmen making their collegiate debuts in Ronan Donnelly (Wantagh, NY), Matthew Fritzsche (New Fairfield) and Andrew Schmidt (North Attleboro, MA). Ronan scored the team's first and last goals. Returning senior scoring leader Warren Channing (Glastonbury) was held off the board but was the Warriors' biggest offensive threat, unloading nine of the team's 33 shots. Junior Tanner Drobish (Wallingford) contributed his 32nd and 33rd career assists.

First-year players also took the majority of faceoffs, with Jake Correia (East Lyme) going 10-of-16 from the faceoff X and Cooper Bengtson (Glastonbury) winning four of nine. Sophomore Logan Pych (Vernon, NJ) won six ground balls and sophomore Zack Magarelli (Yorktown Heights, NY) caused two turnovers.

Making his 24th consecutive start and 31st in a possible 32 career games, junior Gregory Hilinski (Shelton) was credited with nine saves on 29 Farmingdale shots which reached goal.

Juniors Joey Forchelli and Adam Giovinco, and freshman Ethan Vargas combined for 13 Farmingdale goals on 28 shots. The Warriors were outshot by 19 and turned the ball over 24 times.

Eastern opens its home season a week from Saturday, March 14 against Roger Williams University at 1 p.m. at Rick McCarthy Field. The Hawks lead the all-time series, 8-5, having won the last three since the Warriors posted a wild 12-11 double overtime win at home in 2022.

Coming off a 9-9 season which included a 16-10 win over the Warriors at Bayside Field and a first-round Conference of New England tournament loss (also by a score of 16-10), Roger Williams has dropped its first three matches of this season. Prior to meeting Eastern, the Hawks were scheduled to play at Maine Maritime Academy Saturday and at home Wednesday, March 11, against Kean University.
