Baseball: Four-Run Fifth Inning Helps Lyons End Warriors' Winning Streak

Box Score
MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team (20-7-1) suffered a defeat to Wheaton College (19-8) on senior night at Holowaty Family Field. The Lyons led for the majority of the game, building up a 5-0 advantage before the Warriors scored a pair of consolation runs in the bottom of the eighth.

First-year righty Brian Goglia (Milford) – a redshirt sophomore transfer from Virginia Commonwealth -- was given his first career start on the mound for the Warriors and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs, striking out three. Goglia started well, moving through the first with a 1, 2, 3 inning and retiring the first two batters in the top of the second. Derek Babineau was the first of the Lyons to reach base, using his speed to score on an RBI double from Ray Toth.

Wheaton built on their 1-0 advantage in the fifth inning, scoring four decisive runs and forcing Goglia to exit. Evan Jones was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and a double down the right field line from Logan Downey put runners in scoring position with no outs. Two more Wheaton runs came across the plate before senior righty Connor Willett (Rockfall) made his first in over a month.

Willett nearly forced Robbie Lamond to ground into a double play, but he beat out the throw to first, reaching on a fielder's choice. After the following batter walked, Willett's failed pickoff attempt saw Lamond score. The fifth and final Wheaton run was scored by Declan Lush, who reached home off the bat of Babineau and give the Lyons a 5-0 advantage.

It was not until the eighth inning where the Warriors were able to score off Wheaton's Braden Young. Starter Cameron Hasenfus and reliever Evan Mello combined to pitch the first five innings of the evening. Little East Conference RBI leader Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) drove in two more with a single and advancement to second base. First-year junior transfer Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY) and sophomore Eric Mathewson (Eastford) both scored on the play, but a groundout ended the inning.

Josh Fischer entered the game for the save, forcing the last of five double plays to end the game and break the Warriors' five-game winning streak.

Eastern takes on Keene State College in a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday at noon at Holowaty Family Field. The Owls are coming off an 8-7 loss against the University of Hartford, an opponent the Warriors tied 12-12 in an eight-inning game earlier in the year. Prior to this loss, Keene State had won eight out of nine games, dating back to a 11-2 win over UMass Boston in the second game of an LEC doubleheader. Keene State bats .338 as a team, the highest mark in the LEC, but Eastern's team ERA of 4.96 ranks second in the conference.
