Men's Lacrosse: Six Consecutive Viking Goals Doom the Warriors in Conference Loss

| By:
Box Score SALEM, Mass.  –  Despite strong offensive efforts from sophomore attacker, Landon Mabb (Sun Prairie, WI), a second and third-quarter spurt from Salem State, in a low-scoring affair, denied the Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team their first road victory, as the Warriors fell, 7-6, Saturday afternoon at O'Keefe Field. It was Eastern's first loss to the Vikings in program history.

Game Information:
  • Score: Eastern Connecticut State University 6, Salem State University  7
  • Records: Eastern (2-4) (LEC 1-2), Salem State (8-3) (LEC 3-1)
  • Location: Salem, MA | (O'Keefe Field)
How It Happened:
Quarter 1
  • Despite an early goal, the Warriors and the Vikings played a relatively quiet first quarter, both teams facing chilly conditions and empty trips to the attacking third until Eastern opened scoring with Mabb securing his first goal of the afternoon at 13:08, for a 1-0 lead.
  • After, both the hosts and visitors settled for an empty six minutes, the Vikings especially struggling with shaky offense, unable to capitalize, succumbing to turnovers as Eastern grabbed another goal at 7:06, this time Warren Channing (Glastonbury) firing to extend the lead 2-0, which would remain the lone goal for another six minutes until the Vikings finally broke through at a late 42 seconds from James Tatro making it 2-1.
Quarter 2
  • Mabb wasted no time yet again with a strike at the 13-minute mark, assisted by Tanner Drobish (Wallingford) for a 3-1 lead, but that would stand as the only Warriors goal of the quarter as the Vikings charged for three straight unanswered goals to push past the Warriors.
  • Eastern's defense dropped considerably, as the brigade was headed by Connor Vittands at 11:18, followed by a quick two-strike burst of tide-turning Salem goals within two minutes to end the quarter at 4-3, Salem heading into halftime.
Quarter 3
  • The third quarter was all Salem as the Vikings' offensive charge broke down Eastern's defense, controlling the attacking zone completely. They scored three more goals to extend their lead, and the Warriors only managed one, courtesy of Zack Magarelli (Yorktown Heights, NY), though it would not be enough as Eastern trailed 7-4.
Quarter 4
  • Eastern attempted redemptioncontrolling the faceoffs, and generating multiple scoring chances. Mabb came back for his third goal of the game, followed by Drobish adding another at the three-minute mark, to edge the Vikings to a one-point difference, but despite the Warriors' active offense, the Vikings held firm for a final of 7-6, Salem.
Game Notes:
  • Mabb led the Warriors with three goals.
  • Drobish added one goal and one assist.
  • Magarelli and Channing each scored one goal.
  • Goalkeeper Gregory Hilinski (Shelton) made ten saves in the loss.
