Seven Win Events for Eastern Women's Swimming

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Seven different swimmers contributed at least one first to carry the Eastern Connecticut State University women's swim team past the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 151-120, Saturday afternoon at the Tripp Athletic Center.

 The dual meet win is the fifth against one loss for Eastern while UMass Dartmouth (5-2) lost its first dual to a Division III opponent this season. Since losing against UMass the first five times the programs met in dual competition, the Warriorrs have downed the Corsairs the last seven times.

Freshman Macaire Jones (Danbury) captured the 50 (26.66) and 100 freestyle (57.59) for the Warriors Saturday, with freshman Katie King (Barkamsted) claiming the 50 breaststroke (32.56) for the fourth time this year in as many attempts. King also produced the fastest time in the 200 individual medley (2:24.32) while swimming on an exhibition basis.

Additional firsts were turned in by senior Stephanie O'Kelly (Westport) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.67), juniors Becky Odgers (Shelton) in the 1,650 freestyle (19:10.00) and Michelle Schapp (Torrington) in the 100 backstroke (1:04.64), and sophomores Abby Arisco (Wallingford) in the 500 freestyle (5:48.99) and Kayla Smoragiewicz (Norwalk) in the 50 backstroke (30.92).

The 200 medley relay opened the meet by going 1-2, with Schapp, Katie King, junior Colleen King (Barkamsted) and Macaire Jones combining on the winning time of 1:59.83. Swimming on an exhibition basis, the 400 freestyle relay compiled the fastest time (4:00.59). O'Kelly, and juniors Jacqueline Tromp (Bohemia, NY), Marissa Colley (East Haven) and Odgers participated in that relay.

In the meet, Eastern took the top two spots in the 200 medley relay, 50 and 100 breaststroke, 50 and 500 freestyle andn 100 backstroke and the first three places in the 100 freestyle. On an exhibition basis, the Warriors also had the fastest two times in the 200 individual medley.

Macaire Jones topped Eastern with 18 points in two individual events, with Arisco, O'Kelly and Smoragiewicz collecting 13 points each with a first and second place outcome, and Odgers 11 points.

Eastern hosts Roger Williams University Saturday at noon in the first of three home dual meets which close out the regular season.
