Eastern Women's Swimming Drops Roger Williams, 154-107

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's swim team  collected 29 of the meet's first 35 points and was never headed in recording a 154-107 victory over Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon at the Sports Center pool.

A total of 16 individual contributed points for the Warriors (6-1), who burst to a 51-22 lead after four events, then pulled away in the ninth event for a 58-point lead when juniors Marissa Colley (East Haven) and Jacqueline Tromp (Bohemia, NY) and sophomore Kayla Smoragiewicz (Norwalk) went 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke.

Six individual claimed first place, with junior Becky Odgers (Shelton) winning the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle, junior Erin McVeigh (Windsor) the 50 butterfly, Colley the 200 backstroke, Smoragiewicz the 100 backstroke, freshman Macaire Jones (Danbury) the 100 freestyle, and freshman Katie King (Barkhamsted) the 100 breaststroke. The 200 medley relay of junior Michelle Schapp (Torrington), Katie King, McVeigh and Colley opened the meet by taking 11 points with a first-place finish.

Odgers led the Warriors with 19 points (adding a point in the 100 freestyle), McVeigh contributing 16, Macaire Jones and Katie King adding 15 each and Colley 13.  In addition to her first, McVeigh was second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 freestyle, Macaire Jones  second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 butterfly, Katie King third in the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley and Colley second in the 200 backstroke.

Behind Odgers, sophomore Abby Arisco (Wallingford) and freshman Courtney Holzer (Cromwell), the Warriors also finished 1-2-3 in the 1000 freestyle and the team commanded the top two spots in the 50 butterfly, 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle.

Four individuals swam to first-place finishes for Roger Williams (7-4): junior Heather Beardsworth (Dover, NH) won the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, sophomore Stephanie Niman (Bristol) the 200 freestyle, junior Kristen Grandonico (Portland, ME) the 50 freestyle,  and senior Melly Marrington (Farmington) the 100 butterfly. Niman, junior Erin Carlson (Watertown), Marrington and Grandonico also teamed to win the meet-ending 200 freestyle relay.

The win was the third straight in dual competition for Eastern over Roger Williams as the Warriors move over .500 (5-4) in the all-time series.

Eastern hosts Western New England University Wednesday at 6 p.m.
