Oh Lord! Buchetto Goes Distance to Silence Jeffs

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn. --  Sophomore lefty Ron Buchetto (Clinton) pitched a complete-game five-hitter in his second career start and the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team broke a tie with four runs in the seventh inning in a 6-2 non-conference win over Amherst College Monday afternoon in the Warriors' home-opener at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

The loss is the first this year in eight northern games for Amherst (13-7), ranked No. 6 in New England. Eastern (9-11) won for the fifth straight time against Amherst and improved to 12-1-1 against the Lord Jeffs in the last 14 meetings.

Buchetto (2-1), who allowed seven hits in four innings in his first career start last Thursday at Manhattanville College, was in command throughout Monday. Against a team with a .351 team batting average, Buchetto never allowed more than one hit in an inning after the first, when the Lord Jeffs scored on singles by Harry Roberson and Mike Odenwaelder in their first at-bat.

Buchetto fanned five and walked four in posting the first complete game this year by an Eastern pitcher, He benefited by a line drive double play that ended the Amherst first, a 5-4-3 double play which ended the second, a sparkling back-hand play over second base by second baseman Corey Keane (Tolland) to end the seventh and a running, one-handed grab in deep center field by sophomore Pat Sirois (Cromwell) to close out the game.

After Amherst tied the game, 2-2, in the sixth with an unearned run on Yanni Thanopoulos' sacrifice fly following an infield error, the Warriors pushed across four runs in the top of the seventh. Junior DH Andrew Scully (Stratford) broke the tie with the eventual game-winning hit: a triple to right-center that drove in sophomore third baseman Chad Adams (Ware, MA). Adamsd had opened the inning with a walk against new pitcher Chris Baldi. With one out, senior rightfielder Kyle Hart (Guilford) plated Scully with a double inside the left field line for the second run, and with two out, senior leftfielder Joe Perez (North Branford) doubled in Hart with an opposite-field drive to right to make it 5-2. An infield error chased home Perez from third with the sixth run.

Sophomore righty Jackson Volle limited Eastern to two runs on six hits through the first six innings before giving way to Baldi. Volle, who has won his three decisions this year, fanned five – including the side in the first – while walking four. However, the Warriors went down in order only in the ninth inning, and left ten baserunners.

Adams, Scully and Perez all had two hits and Keane drove in two runs with his fourth home run of the year that gave Eastern a 2-1 lead in the third.

The top three hitters in the Amherst lineup combined for all of the Lord Jeffs' hits, with Andrew Vandini collecting three with leadoff singles in the fourth and sixth and a one-out single in the eighth. The bottom six hitters in the Amherst lineup were 0-for-18 against Buchetto.

Eastern visits Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference game Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.
