WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Junior Hayley Brodeur (Old Saybrook) broke one minute at 400 meters for the fifth time this year with a personal-best time of 57.37 Saturday and was one of seven Eastern Connecticut State University individuals to merit All-New England honors at the Division III outdoor championship meet this weekend at the Lee Track & Field Complex on the campus of Williams College.
Brodeur's time -- the second-fastest in program history and the 32nd-fastest this year in Division III -- was less than a second off the program-record of 56.44 set by All-America and Eastern Hall of Famer Judy Pemberton at the 1984 nationals at North Central College and gave her a sixth-place finish in her second appearance in the championship in two years. Seeded seventh in the meet, Brodeur was coming off a first-place finish last Saturday (58.99) at the Little East Conference Championships.
The top eight individuals and relays are recognized as All-New England.
On Friday, sophomore Madeleine Dalberg (Pitea, Sweden) earned All-New England recognition for the fourth time in two years in the long jump with a third-place finish on the second day of the championships.
Seeded fourth, Dalberg recorded a jump of 18-1 (5.51m), just 3/4 of an inch off the program record which she set earlier this year. Little East Conference competitors finished 1-2-3 in the event. Dalberg currently has the 44th-best jump in Division III
As a freshman, she was sixth in the event in the New England outdoor meet, and indoors, was third as a freshman and seventh this past February.
After finishing 18th in the New England indoor championships this past February with a mark of 40-6, junior JahDey Wright (Colchester) jumped a career-best 44-6 (13.56m) in his first appearance in the triple jump in outdoor competition Saturday, good enough for seventh place in a field of 22 and All-New England honors. The mark was ¾ of an inch farther than a week ago, when he was third overall in the New England Alliance Championships.
The men's 4x100 relay was first among six New England Alliance teams Saturday and raced to All-New England honors with an eighth-place finish among 23 relays in a season-best time of 42.86. The relay had won the Little East title last Saturday for the fourth time in nine years in a time of 43.46. The relay edged Westfield State by .19 seconds for the final All-New England spot.
Competitors for Eastern were graduate student Nick Afragola (Killingworth), freshman Tyler Lindquist (Worcester, MA), junior John Meade (Southington) and sophomore Nicklas Brink (Stockholm, Sweden).
