Cross Country: Men, Women Excel at Keene State Invitational

Men are champs, women fourth

KEENE, N.H. -- On Wednesday, Eastern Connecticut State University was swept in Little East Conference competition, with the men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball teams all losing to Western Connecticut State University.
 
Saturday, the Warriors regained their footing, with the men's and women's soccer and volleyball teams all winning out over Keene State College. And it was the men's cross country team applying the piece de resistance and completing the sweep by winning the Keene State Invitational over an 8000 meter course on the KSC campus.
 
As a team, the Eastern men topped a field of 20 teams, with senior Ryan Escoda (Newtown), sophomore Noah Linton (Tolland) and junior Thomas Stone (Glastonbury)  all finishing among the Top 10 in a field of 157 finishers.
 
The Eastern women – led  by senior Keara Fontaine (North Kingstown, RI) -- also distinguished themselves with a fourth-place finish in a field of 18 squads over the 5000 meter course which included 138 finishers.
 
Included in the men's field were four additional Little East Conference teams. UMass Dartmouth (67) was second, 11 points behind Eastern, with Keene State College eighth, UMass Boston tenth and Castleton University 12th.
 
The Eastern women totalled 129 points, one point out of third place. Keene State led all LEC teams with 116 points and second place, with UMass Dartmouth seventh, Castleton tied for 11th and UMass Boston 13th.
 
Escoda was third overall in the men's field in a time of 25:55, one minute behind Brandeis University senior Matthew Driben and 35 seconds behind Keene State senior Jake Pearle. Lindon was seventh (26:05) and Stone (26:10) ninth overall.  Rounding out the men's scoring five runners were first-year junior transfer Michael Parzych (Berlin) and senior Jorich Swift (Mansfield). Parzych was 15th (26:31) and Swift 22nd (26:43).
 
Fontaine was one of three Eastern women among the Top 25. Fontaine was 18th (19:48), with senior Kelsey Zator (Scotland) 23rd (20:05) and junior Elisabeth Rodil (Milford, NH) 25th (20:07). Completing Eastern's five scoring runners were sophomore Alison LeClerc (Wolcott) and first-year runner Meghan Georgescu (Cheshire). LeClerc was 28th (20:10) and Georgescu 35th (20:29).

All 14 members of the men's roster and nine of ten for the women competed in the meet.
 
Eastern competes at the Connecticut College Invitational Oct. 15 at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford at 10 a.m.
