DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Eastern Connecticut State University men and women each had two individual champions and the winning 4x400 meter relay and had a total of 28 individuals and three relays finish in the top 30 percent of their events Saturday at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsair Classic at the Corsair Track & Field Complex.
Behind first-place finishes from senior
Thomas Stone (Glastonbury) and junior
Adam Schimmelpfennig (Pomfret) and the 4x400 meter relay, the men (108 points) placed third behind WPI and Bridgewater State University, as one of three teams to total more than 100 points. The Warriors finished just 4.5 points behind Bridgewater. The men featured individuals with 17 finishes among the top 30 percent in each individual event, as well as both relays.
Junior
Ali LeClerc (Wolcott) and sophomore
Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) captured individual events and the 4x400 meter relay placed first for the women. The women featured individuals with 11 finishes among the top 30 percent in each individual event, as well as the winning 4x400 relay, and were fifth among 12 full teams which scored points. Eastern had 65 points. WPI ran away with the team title, totalling 203 points, 83 more than runner-up Springfield College.
In all, Eastern athletes posted the best marks in the Little East Conference this year in ten events. For the men,
Kaito Yasuda (Columbia) in the 100,
Sam Klein (Shelton) in the 200, Schimmelpfennig in the 110 hurdles (by nearly two seconds), and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays; for the women: LeClerc in the 3000SC, Frisch in the pole vault, first-year athlete
Laci Davis (Prospect) in the triple jump,
Shannon Burby (Wolcott) in the javelin, and the 4x400 relay.
On Saturday, Eastern competes in the U.S. Coast Guard Invitational and/or at the Southern Connecticut Wilton Wright Invitational, both beginning at 10 a.m.
