Track & Field: Warriors Excel in Hosting LEC Championship for First Time

Men place second, women third at Mansfield Complex


MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University track and field team hosted the Little East Conference Championships on Saturday at the Mansfield Athletic Complex. The Warriors benefited from several top three finishers across the running, jumping, and throwing events, while five different Eastern athletes set school records. The women's team finished with 126 points, coming in third place, while the men finished with 151 points and came in second place.
 
Anaka Eaton (Coventry) took down the 39-year-old women's hammer throw school record of 50.24 meters (164'10) set by Bonnie Edmondson in 1984. Eaton won the event with a mark of 50.82m (166'9), which she achieved on her second throw. Eaton also took fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 38.23m (125'5) and third in the shot put with a mark of 12.20m (40'0.25). In the women's 100m, Naziah Johnson (Norwalk) broke Givanni Perry's (Hartford) school record, running 12.20 to beat Perry's 12.37 and come in second overall.
 
Laci Davis (Prospect) won the triple jump with a new school record of 11.56m (37'11), beating Casondra Caldwell's (Bridgeport) record of 11.47m (37'7.75). Caldwell finished second in the competition today, jumping 11.21m (36'9.25). In the men's 10k, Noah Hauswirth (Branford) got the day started with a second-place finish and a new school record of 32:11.10. The former record was held by Tyler Wright, who ran 32:32.16 in Springfield, MA. The final school record to fall was the 400-meter hurdles record of 54.45. Hagen Drake (Stonington) lowered his previous record, running 54.09 for second place today. He also ran 15.04 in the 110m hurdles for the win.
 
In the men's 200m, the Warriors picked up fourth and sixth place finishes through Kenyon Morrissette (Lebanon) and James Saint-Jean (Bridgeport). Morrissette finished fourth in 22.33 and Saint-Jean was sixth in 22.50. Saint-Jean also ran 50.17 in the men's 400m for second overall, while his teammates finished fourth, fifth, and sixth. Zachary D'Andrea (Wallingford) led the Warriors in the men's 800m with a time of 1:55.49 for second. Sam Ambrocio (Beacon Falls) was fourth in 1:56.38 and Joey Caruk (Wethersfield) was fifth in 1:58.49.
 
Ambrocio and D'Andrea went 2,3 in the 1500m, running 4:03.60 and 4:05.65, respectively. Jake Thompson (Portland) finished third in the men's steeplechase, running 9:56.52. The Warriors performed well in the relays, winning the 4x400m relay in 3:22.34 and taking second in the 4x800m relay in 8:02.65. Tristan Nye (Willimantic) finished third in the men's triple jump with a mark of 12.80m (42'0).
 
In addition to her triple jump school record, Davis finished third in the women's 400m in a time of 58.02. In the women's steeplechase, Keira Warner (Ellington) scored four points with her 12:27.47 for fifth overall. The Warriors took third place in the women's 4x100m relay, running 48.83. Most of the points came in the field for the women, as Perry, Angelina Taccogna (Stratford), and Izzy Northrop (Uncasville) finished second, fourth, and fifth in the high jump. Perry led the group, clearing 1.57m (5'1.75). In the women's long jump, Caldwell jumped 5.56m (18'3) for second, Davis jumped 5.44m (17'10.25) for third, and Perry jumped 5.40m (17'8.75) for fifth.
 
The Warriors return to action this coming Friday and Saturday at the New England Division III Track & Field Championships, a two-day meet hosted by Springfield College at Blake Track in Springfield, MA. Last season, the meet was hosted by the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. The men finished 17th out of 34 teams and the women finished t-22nd out of 39 teams.
