Baseball: Warriors Use Late Momentum from Game One to Fuel Game Two Domination in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DAVENPORT, FL. – The Eastern Connecticut State University Baseball Team (8-2) closed out their time in Davenport with a doubleheader against Worcester State University (1-5), defeating the Lancers twice to move to 5-0 in Florida, with one game in Auburndale remaining. Head coach Mike Odenwaelder reached his 100th win in yesterday's match against Benedictine (IL.).

The Warriors found themselves trailing late in game one, losing their early 1-0 lead by the third inning. Following up on his performance against Benedictine yesterday, Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA) hit another home run on his first at bat today, giving Eastern a slight edge early on. Starting pitcher Jake Shaughnessy (Franklin, MA) was effective on the mound, allowing just three hits and two earned runs in four innings of work. The first run for the Lancers was delivered by Riggs Catlin, who sent a single to right field, scoring Derek De La Cruz.

Catlin had another RBI in the fifth inning, hitting a fly ball to right, scoring Kevin Doyle and giving Worcester State a 2-1 lead. Sebastien Dostal (Londonderry, VT) took over for Shaughnessy and kept the Warriors within striking distance. In the final inning of the 7-inning doubleheader, the Warriors were finally able to generate their best offense of the game. Lucas Malave (Toms River, NJ) and Danny DiNorcia (Naples, FL) singled to opposite sides of the field. The Lancers elected to take their efficient starter Jack Hildred out of the game, replacing him with Tedy Cove. Hildred allowed just four hits and struck out seven batters in his outing.

With Cove on the mound, Teige Kimbler (Albany, NY) moved runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Sunday's hero Dylan Jackson (Manchester) was given a chance to repeat history at the plate and delivered. This time, Jackson sent a three-run home run to left and gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Nicholas Furino (East Haven) took over for Dostal and retired the three Lancers he faced, giving Eastern the win in a tightly contested first game.

Using newfound momentum from game one of the doubleheader, the Warriors came out firing for game two. Once again, Moser took advantage of his first opportunity, this time scoring Jackson with his home run to make it 3-0 after Jackson's RBI single. Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY) brought in a fourth run for the Warriors after Jackson was walked in the third. Moser then earned his third, fourth, and fifth RBIs of the game with a double to left center, increasing Eastern's lead to 7-0 in the third. Sean Fallon (Bethel) drove in the fifth Warrior run in the third, scoring Moser.

E.J. Nevills (Westwood, MA) took care of business on the mound, allowing two hits, two walks, and no runs on the mound for Eastern, striking out six batters. A Malave home run gave the Warriors a commanding 9-0 lead heading into the seventh, but Worcester State was able to bring a few runs back when they were down to their last out. Catlin doubled to left center, scoring three Lancers, but Andrew Merrill (South Paris, ME) was able to retire Alan Carpenter for the last out of the game.

The Warriors are back in action on Thursday for a 9:30 a.m. matchup against Ramapo College at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, FL. This will be their last match before beginning conference play against VTSU Castleton at home at the newly named Holowaty Family Field. Ramapo is 7-3 on the season and most recently split a 7-inning doubleheader against Southern Maine of the Little East Conference.
