DANBURY, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team (19-6-1, 7-2 LEC) returned to Little East Conference action on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Western Connecticut State University (7-18, 2-9 LEC) at Westside Field by a score of 13-3 in seven innings.
The Warriors' offense stayed hot against Western Connecticut, accumulating 18 hits in their dominant win. Five hits were courtesy of
Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY) who was a perfect 5-5 on the day, including an RBI and four runs. Carrera's first run came in the top of the first inning, scoring on a two-run double from
Ian Moser (Bellingham, MA). Moser's five RBIs bring his total to 11 over the past two games.
In the third inning, Eastern added another three runs to bring their advantage to 5-0. Moser hit a two-run home run to center field off starting pitcher Joe Fasano, scoring
Lucas Malave (Toms River, NJ). The Wolves struck back in the fifth with three consecutive hits off
Nicholas Furino (East Haven), who was given the start for the Warriors. Furino exited after three innings, striking out three batters and allowing just one earned run.
Jake Soellner (Berlin) entered for Furino in the bottom of the fourth and faced two batters, recording all three outs in just eight pitches and more importantly, keeping the Warriors up by two runs.
After allowing three runs in the fourth that cut Eastern's lead to 5-3, the Warriors exploded for six runs in the fifth on five hits. Eastern doubled its opponents' offense in the fifth, led off by another home run from Moser.
Danny DiNorcia (Naples, FL) hit a two-RBI triple to right field, making it an 8-3 game. The Warriors would add three more runs in the fifth, putting the game out of reach for the Wolves.
Eastern was able to give
Jason Hernandez (Bridgeport) his first career appearance in the bottom of the seventh. Hernandez faced five batters (all pinch hitters), allowing one hit and striking out a batter in his inning of work. The Warriors have scored 41 runs over the past two games and reached 43 hits in their win over Western Connecticut. After a flawless game against Johnson & Wales, Eastern made just one error in today's 13-3 win.
The Warriors host Amherst College (17-7) in a non-conference game Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Holowaty Family Field. Eastern owns the series lead 26-15, seeking their first win since 2015. Amherst has won the previous four meetings, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the sixth in its 9-3 win last season.

Mike Odenwaelder opened the scoring for the Mammoths, hitting an RBI single to left center. Eastern scored four in the bottom of the seventh, winning 6-2. The Mammoths recently defeated Tufts University in a doubleheader Saturday.
