Baseball: Slump Continues as Mariners Earn First Win Over Eastern in 10 Years

Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team (20-10-1) was defeated by Mitchell College (24-9) on Monday evening at Holowaty Family Field by a score of 7-2. Dom Yarson pitched a complete game for the Mariners, finishing with 131 pitches in his nine-

strikeout performance, moving to 5-2 on the season.

Mitchell scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings of the game despite only recording two hits. In the first inning, four walks and a wild pitch allowed the Mariners to bring home Christopher Piscione and Michael Ficocelli. Starting pitcher E.J. Nevills (Westwood, MA) was pulled after just 1.1 innings, allowing four runs to score without allowing a hit. He was replaced by Justin Hernandez (Corona, NY), who also struggled, allowing three runs while recording just one out.

Nicholas Bracale broke the game open with a three-run double to give the Mariners a 7-0 advantage in the second inning. He finished the game as one of the two Mariners to record a hit all game. Kenneth Miller Jr. finished 1-3 with two RBIs and Mitchell managed just three hits on the day, but benefited from eight walks, two wild pitches, and had two batters hit by pitches.

The Warriors played a very clean game in the field and Eric Mathewson (Eastford) pitched a great game on the mound, entering for 5.1 innings of relief and allowing one hit, no walks, and striking out two of the 17 batters he faced. Mathewson and Yarson combined for a very swift middle portion of the match, but Matthew Carrera (Mount Sinai, NY) was able to hit and score in an otherwise quiet bottom of the sixth for the Warriors.

In the bottom of the ninth, leadoff man PJ Ortiz (Manchester) benefited from a misjudged ball by left fielder Jayden Sgro and reached on the error. Ortiz advanced to second and third on a pair of wild pitches from Yarson, scoring easily on an RBI single from Chad Byrd (Bridgeport). Despite his triple-digit pitch count, the Mariners stuck with Yarson and he was able to earn the last out of the game and lead his team to a 7-2 victory on Military Appreciation Night.

The Warriors will have a few days off before taking on WPI at 3:30 on Thursday at New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, MA. The Engineers are currently 13-16 and will host the United States Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday before their meeting with the Warriors. WPI split a doubleheader against Clark University on Saturday, winning the first game 15-5 in seven innings and losing the second 9-5. The Warriors are 4-0 against the Engineers all-time and defeated them 15-10 on last year's military appreciation night.
