MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Junior
Collin Wiltshire (Ledyard) and first-year performer
Adam Schimmelpfennig (Pomfret) became only the second Eastern Connecticut State University athletes ever to earn All-New England honors in the triple jump and 60 meter hurdles, respectively, at the New England Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships, which were held Friday and Saturday at the Virtue Field House/New Balance Foundation Track on the campus of Middlebury College.
Four Eastern athletes competed in a total of six individual events, with five athletes teaming to run two relays. With the exception of the distance medley relay, all of Eastern's events were held on Saturday. The top eight finishers in each event are accorded All-New England status.
This year's Little East Conference champion, Wiltshire placed second in a field of 23 with a mark of 46-2 ½ (14.08m), while Schimmelpfennig set a program record of 8.44 in placing seventh in a field of 27 as the second freshman finisher. At last week's LEC meet, Schimmelpfennig broke the 12-year-old program record in the 55 hurdles with a preliminary time of 7.87 in an eventual third-place finish, and as the first freshman in that event, qualified automatically for the All-Rookie Team.
Wiltshire becomes the program's second All-New England indoor triple jumper in three years, joining JahDey Wright, who was eighth with a mark of 44-10 ¾ (13.68) at Springfield College in 2020.
Prior to this year, only Schimmelpfennig's current assistant coach,
Andre Reynolds, had attained indoor All-New England recognition in the 60 hurdles, when he was timed in 8.62 in the preliminaries en route to a seventh-place finish at MIT as a junior in 2014. Schimmelpfennig's record time Saturday breaks Reynolds' eight-year-old program record of 8.48 set in the preliminaries of the New England Open at Boston University in 2014.
With the ten points provided by Wiltshire and Schimmelpfennig, Eastern placed 20
th among 25 teams which scored at least one point.
Sophomore
Aidan Hennessy (Granby) qualified for the championships in three events, barely missing All-New England honors when he shared ninth place in the high jump with a mark of 6-1 ¼ (1.86m). He was also 20
th in the triple jump (39-5 3/4/12.03m) and was timed in 9.02 in the preliminaries of the 60 hurdles. Sophomore
Conor Hennessy (Granby) followed his brother by placing 21
st in the triple jump (39-4/11.99m). Wiltshire, Aidan and
Conor Hennessy had gone 1-2-3 in the triple jump to help the team to second place at last Saturday's LEC Championships at the University of Southern Maine.
Also competing were the distance medley relay on Friday and the 4x800 meter relay on Saturday. The 800 relay posted the fifth-fastest time in program history (8:14.44) in an 11
th-place finish while the DMR was 13
th in a time of 10:54.62. Senior
Ryan Escoda (Newtown) and first-year runners
Noah Linton (Tolland) and
Liam Stafford (Alexandria, VA) competed on both relays, while senior
Tyler Lindquist (Worcester, MA) ran the DMR and sophomore
Thomas Stone (Glastonbury) the 4x800.
On the DMR, Stafford ran the first 1200 meters, followed by Lindquist (400), Linton (800) and Escoda (mile). Two weeks ago, Escoda set a program record at 3000 meters (8:47.72) at Boston University.
