WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore two-sport standout
Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) needed only four outdoor meets this year to establish a program record in the pole vault when she recorded a mark of 11-5 3/4 in winning the event at the Westfield State University Jerry Gravel Invitational at the Gravel Track Saturday.
Frisch, a 100 yard individual medley Little East Conference swimming champion and captain on the conference championship women's swim team this past winter, broke the previous pole vault record of 10-feet-8 inches set by Erika Barber in 2010 and equalled by Amy Huhn two years later. Frisch had jumped 10-feet-2 inches in each of this year's previous meets, winning the event in a field of 11 at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic two weeks ago.
Frisch's winning jump of 11-5 3/4 is the best in the Little East Conference this year, well above University of Southern Maine sophomore Riley Reitchel, who posted a mark of 10-feet-2 inches April 6 at the U.S. Coast Guard Spring Invitational.
Saturday, Frisch passed on the first five heights, cleared heights in her first try at 8-10 1/4 and 10-2, tied the program record on her first jump at 10-8, then broke the record in her first attempt at 10-11 3/4, and extended the program record to 11-5 3/4 on her third attempt at that height. Her three bids at 11-11 3/4 failed, but her record jump of 11-5 3/4 was more than enough to best freshman runner-up Maizie Poulakis (8-10 1/4) of Utica College.
As a team, the Eastern women placed fifth in a seven-team field with 36 points, while the men were fourth among four teams with 84 points.
