Track & Field: Warriors Excel in Season-Opening Wesleyan Invitational

Newcomers impress in their collegiate debut

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Warriors competed at the Wesleyan University Indoor Invitational non-scoring meet at the Bacon Field House in their season-opener Saturday. Following the 2-and-a-half-month cross country season, those team members did not compete this weekend.

Without their complete team, the Warriors still earned 12 first-place finishes at Wesleyan (7 from the women and 5 from the men). Eastern had complete control of the field events, winning all 6 on the women's side and 4 out of the 6 on the men's side. Sophomore Anaka Eaton (Coventry) – competing indoors for the first time after playing basketball a year ago -- won the weight throw by over 10 feet, with her throw of 46'2.75 on her 5th attempt. She also won the shot put, with an effort of 38'11.75.

Sophomore Givanni Perry (Hartford) won the long jump with a mark of 17'5.25" on her final attempt. Eastern took the top 4 spots in the field of 5 in this event. Perry's jump of 5'3 was enough to give her first place in the high jump, capping off a successful day. With the bar at 5'5", Perry just missed breaking Lauren Hultzman's 11-year-old record of 5'4 1/2". Junior Laci Davis (Prospect) finished in the top 2 of three different events, winning the triple jump with a mark of 35'7.25".

In the pole vault, senior All-America Natasha Frisch (Mendota Heights, MN) and junior Katelyn DeNunzio (Bolton) took the top 2 places in 10'11.75" and 8'2.5", respectively. The final first-place finisher for the women was junior Jasmine Charlery (New Britain), who won the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 26.81, the only athlete in the field of 13 to finish in under 27 seconds.

First-year Mark Boudreau (Oxford) won the shot put with a final throw of 46'11.5", accompanied by three teammates who took the 3,4, and 5 spots of the 8-man field. Juniors Michael Hemmings (Bridgeport) and Dustin Sannasi (Waterbury) went 1,2 in the triple jump and high jump. Hemmings won both events with marks of 43'11.25" in the triple jump and 6'2.75" in the high jump. Sannasi cleared 6'2.75" on his second attempt, but Hemmings wins the tiebreaker, as he cleared it on his first.

Sophomore Bode Paquin (Windham) and first-year Joseph Richardson (Milford) both cleared heights in the pole vault. Paquin took first with a jump of 12'5.5" and Richardson cleared 11'5.75". First-year Hagen Drake (Stonington) led the Warriors in the hurdles with a time of 8.60 in finals. Eastern took the top 3 places in the 6-man field, all of whom were racing collegiately for the first time.

The Warriors are back in action December 12-13 at the Art Kadish Elm City Challenge hosted by Southern Connecticut State University at the Moore Field House. This will be Eastern's last meet before weekly competition is underway in 2026.
