As an integral member of the vaunted softball Class of 1988, Cathy J. McGillicuddy was a selfless and versatile team player on teams which won four straight NCAA Division III Northeast Regional and two national crowns and compiled an overall record of 141-37 (79.2 percent). The Fairfield native was selected as a second-team NCAA Division III All-America at utility position as a junior and at third base as a senior. She was also a three-time first-team all-region or all-New England pick at second base, utility and third base. McGillicuddy was the team’s starting second baseman and No. 2 hitter in the order as both a freshman and sophomore when the youthful Warriors captured the 1985 and 1986 NCAA Division III national championships. As a junior in 1987, McGillicuddy pitched and played center field. On the mound that year, she captured her first nine pitching decisions, winning 14 of 16 in all for a program-record .875 winning percentage. At the time of her graduation, she held or shared career records for hits (177), at-bats (539), doubles (28), sacrifices (42) and assists (277). The 5-foot-3 inch McGillicuddy also absorbed an assortment or injuries to play parts of three basketball seasons for teams which qualified for two ECAC and one NCAA post-season tournaments. As a sophomore starter in 1985-86, she represented her team on the season-opening Eastern Tip-Off Tournament all-tournament team. As a senior, McGillicuddy was the female recipient of the ECSU/Metropolitan Life Scholar-Athlete Award.
