Leonard E. Reed holds the distinction as the first All-America athlete in the baseball program’s history. A Willimantic native, Reed starred in both baseball and basketball between 1969 and 1973, performing the rare feat of both scoring 1,000 points in basketball and collecting 100 hits in baseball. In baseball, Reed was selected a second team All-America outfielder as a freshman in 1970 when he batted a career-high .410, and was the starting rightfielder as a senior in 1973 when the team placed second in its first-ever national baseball championship tournament. A team co-captain as a senior in basketball, the 6-foot, 165-pound Reed scored 1,033 points (12.3 avg.). In 1969-70, he helped the Warriors to their winningest (21-4) season to that point in program history, and two years later, into their first NAIA post-season tournament.
