Michael A. Turgeon was a three-year starter at shortstop who led his teams in assists each season and in hits twice before being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the amateur draft after his junior season. A switch-hitter, Turgeon was selected first-team All-New England in 1976 and 1977 and was named to head coach Bill Holowaty’s Team-of-the-Decade in 1979 and his Silver Anniversary Team in 1993. In a 137-game career, Turgeon batted .321 with 150 hits, 230 total bases and 312 assists. At the time of his graduation, he ranked second all-time in assists (312) and third in hits and triples (9) and through 2004, still ranked in the Top 10 in triples and assists. His teams won 72.1 per cent of their games (101-39) and qualified for post-season play each season. As a freshman, the Groton native helped the Warriors win the NAIA District 32 and Area 8 tournament titles and finish in a tie for third nationally at the NAIA World Series. In his final season, he started all 44 games at shortstop, batting .375 and becoming the first player in program history record as many as 60 hits in a season. That year, Turgeon had 19 multiple-hit games, reached safely in each of his final 22 contests and hit safely in his final 12. Among his post-season tournament highlights were a game-ending home run against Monmouth College in an elimination game of the 1975 NAIA Area 8 tournament, and three hits – including a double and home run – and four RBI in a 9-6 win over Ithaca College in the opening round of the 1977 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional tournament at Alumni Field.
