Roland F. “Frank” Johndrow lettered four seasons in basketball and baseball under Hall of Fame coach Francis E. Geissler. The 5-foot-8 inch Stafford Springs native brought quickness and outside shooting ability to the basketball floor and speed to his position in center field in baseball. With Johndrow, the Warriors posted winning records each season in both sports. In basketball, Johndrow averaged 17.1 points in a 76-game career, graduating as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,302 points. On Feb. 2, 1957 – in just his 13th collegiate game – Johndrow set the program’s single-game scoring record with 42 points at Rhode Island College – a mark which currently remains intact. In basketball, Johndrow averaged a career-high 20.5 points as a freshman and as a junior in 1958-59, helped lead Willimantic State to a 15-5 record and its only New England Teachers’ College Conference (NETCC) tournament title. In baseball, Johndrow played shortstop and catcher, in addition to center field, and batted primarily in the leadoff position. As a sophomore in 1958, Johndrow batted a career-high .323 with team-leading totals in runs and at-bats when the Warriors won 12 of 16 games – the program’s most wins in a season until 1970.
