Richard J. “JJ” Grenier was one of the outstanding two-sport athletes in the formative years of the athletic program, playing baseball and basketball for four years under Hall of Fame coach Francis E. Geissler. In addition to his contributions as an active player, Grenier returned in 1984 to serve ten seasons on the softball coaching staff, helping the Warriors to nine regional titles and three national championships. A Willimantic native, Grenier excelled as a four-year starter in baseball, providing speed in center field and to his leadoff position and also serving as a regular pitcher in his final two campaigns. As a senior, the 5-foot-8 inch, 155 pound lefty became the first pitcher in program history to defeat Central Connecticut State University in a memorable 3-1 decision over the Educators’ powerful rivals. As a junior, Grenier truly excelled, leading the “Teachers” in many offensive categories, including average, on-base percentage and runs and also scoring the first run on Knight (Alumni) Field on May 7. Upon graduation, Grenier became the program’s first baseball player to sign a professional contract, spending the 1953 season with the Chicago Cubs’ Class D Janesville, Wis. affiliate.
