Kevin J. Barboza concluded a dominant four-year basketball career ranked second all-time with 1,418 career points – a mark which currently ranks him third all-time, only 56 points behind the leader. The 6-foot-4 inch, 200 pound native of Pawtucket, R.I. relied upon strength, stamina and a fierce determination to succeed against taller opposing post players. In addition to scoring over 1,000 points, Barboza’s 96-game career included 643 rebounds (6.7 per game), a 51 percent field goal percentage and 123 blocked shots. He was selected the only three-time team MVP in the 13-year tenure of Hall of Fame coach Dr. Dan Switchenko and the first player under Switchenko to be selected a team captain prior to his senior season. After sitting out the first four games of his career with injury, Barboza would not miss another, starting the final 89. In each of his final three seasons, Barboza led the Warriors in scoring and rebounding, minutes played, blocked shots and field goals made and attempted. As a senior, Barboza averaged 16.5 points and 7.1 rebounds and led the Warriors to their winningest season (18-9) in 15 years. That year, Eastern qualified for the ECAC New England Division III tournament and posted the program’s only ECAC tournament victory to date. Barboza was honored at the conclusion of that season by being named first-team All-New England by the ECAC – the only such first-team selection to date in program history.
