Paul P. Martineau ranked seventh all-time in career batting average and tied for third in fielding average at the time of graduation and was a freshman member of the program’s first national championship baseball team in 1982. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Willimantic native batted .349 in a 152-game career. Martineau platooned in left field as a freshman member of the 1982 NCAA Division III national championship team before starting in left field as a sophomore, and later moving to first base and designated hitter in his final two seasons. He was a member of four NCAA tournament teams, two of which won regional championships. Limited to just over 500 official at-bats in his career because of numerous walks (74) and a major finger injury which cost him 21 starts as a senior, Martineau still collected 176 hits, 16 home runs, 272 total bases and 133 RBI. He improved his batting average every season, from .304 as a freshman to a career-high .396 as a senior. After earning second-team All-New England honors at designated hitter and first base as a sophomore and junior, respectively, Martineau gained first-team honors as a senior DH on the way to third-team All-America accolades. Ranked second all-time in field average among first baseman at the time of graduation, Martineau still holds the program game record of ten RBI and shares the game home run record of three. In addition to being ranked among the all-time leaders in batting average and fielding average at the conclusion of his career,  Martineau  ranked tenth in total hits,  sixth in RBI and tied for 11th in home runs. Martineau brought power, consistency, speed and fielding ability to the lineup in helping the Warriors to an average of 34.3 wins per year and an overall winning percentage of  .757. He was named to both head coach Bill Holowaty’s Team-of-the-Decade and to his 25th Anniversary Team.
