A four-year basketball and baseball letterwinner and a two-sport captain, John P. McNally was a quiet, yet fierce, competitor with a gentlemanly demeanor and a commitment to academics.  A native of Avon, Mass., the 6-foot-1 inch, 180-pound McNally was a four-year starter at shooting guard in basketball and a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter as a left-side infield in baseball. And despite his year-round commitment to athletics, McNally maintained a solid grade-point average in the classroom and graduated in four years, Today, 'Johnny Mac' remains one of only three individuals in Eastern athletic history to compile as many as 1,000 career points (1,069) in basketball and collect as many as 100 hits (157) in baseball. As a junior in 1985-86, he led the Warriors to their most wins (18) in 15 years and into the semifinals of the ECAC New England Division III basketball tournament. In baseball, he played on teams which won 75 percent of their games and qualified for four straight NCAA Division III tournaments. As a senior shortstop, he broke the program season record with 140 assists, playing an instrumental role on the 1987 Northeast Regional championship team which advanced to the national tournament at Marietta, Ohio. In the baseball, the right-handed hitting McNally had a career .311 batting average, with ten home runs, 93 RBI, 118 runs scored and 43 stolen bases, and struck out only 32 times in 582 plate appearances. He was named to the All-New England second team as a sophomore in 1985 and to the third team as Eastern’s junior MVP in 1986.
